"Hey girl, miss me?" Mal stroked Penny's nose with one hand as she used the other to begin the brush down. "We're taking Coop on a trail ride today" she continued, in a soothing voice. "Isn't that right Cooper?" She looked over one shoulder at her dog whose leash was tied to a hook on the wall. He was panting eagerly. She turned back to Penny. "I'm sorry I haven't been here in a few days. It's been hectic at home and school. I hope the stable hands have been feeding and exercising you daily like it says on your admittance sheet in the files." She kissed Penny's long nose.

Kristy walked into the stables from the field and saw a car in the lot. She recognized it was Mallory Johnsons car. She smiled, the girl finally got here. It bugged her when clients let there horses go for a few days. She sighed and put Silver, who was her own horse in his stall and then walked over to where Mallory was in her own horses stall. She smiled, "Hey, she missed you. She was a very good girl though" she says as she pats the horse.

"Yeah...she always is." Mal began tacking Penny up while talking to Kristy at the same time. "I got an email from Lori (the owner) saying that there's a change to the competition times this weekend. But she forgot to mention when it had been changed to. Is she in her office, or do you know?" Mal and Penny had been training really hard for the jumping exercises and barrel racing. Mal didn't want to miss the competition because of a time mistake.

Kristy watched as she tacked up Penny and smiled at the horse, she was beautiful and had amazing form when she jumped and was lightening fast around the barrels she then nodded, "yeah they are starting at nine instead of noon. They had more people sign up for the western portion in the afternoon that they had to make it longer" she smiles, "what division are you and Penny in for jumping? Me and silver are doing the four foot jumper timed rounds and then the level three dressage test. Plus one cross country course" she says smiling as she looks over to Silver who was looking at her thinking of the fun times ahead.

"Nine instead of noon, got it." Mal made a mental note to change it on the calander as soon as she got home. "We were going to do the three foot jumps but then Lori told us we were ready for the four footers so we'll be joining you on that event. And we're doing our usual barrell racing. I'm not sure if Lori has us signed up for anything else so I have to check with her before leaving today." She selected a small crop from the barrel and strapped on her helmet. "We were about to go out for a nice and relaxing trail ride. Wanna come?"

Kristy smiled and then nodded, "sure, I have been meaning to take Flash out today its just been busy as we have a new arrival tomorrow" she says, "you go on ahead me and flash will catch up in a few" she smiles as she heads towards the ex-race horses stall. She loved Flash, if he wasnt Lori's horse she would buy him in a heartbeat and re-train him for cross country as he was still only ten years old. She quickly threw on her saddle and his bridle grabbed a helmet and hopped on. She could still see Mallory and trotted after her and caught up quickly. "I rode Penny yesterday acutally since I knew you werent going to be here, Lori had me take her over a few four foot jumps. She was really good, I have you say if you get the speed correct you guys just might beat me and Silver" she laughs.

"Ok, sounds good." Mal unhooked Coop's leash and draped it over her shoulders before mounting Penny. "Take it slow, girl. We're letting them catch up remember?" She stroked Penny's neck as they walked slowly towards the opening for the North trail. The North trail was much better for a relaxing trip. The Southern one was more difficult.
When Kristy and Flash were by their side, Mal picked up the pace a bit. "Really? Well, I guess we'll see this weekend" she laughed.

Kristy had brought Flash back to walk to keep pace with Mallory and Penny. She smiled at Cooper as he walked calmly along side. She then looked up and nodded, "yeah me and Silver have won this thing about every time we have ridden in it. But I think it should be good to get some new competition in there. Most of them are younger kids who dont know how to control there horses and are always about to bounce out of the tack" she scowls.

Mal raised an eyebrow. "Penny and I have won the three foot jumps for the past four years...this should be interesting" she laughed good naturedly. She didn't care if she and Penny won or not. It was just about the fun for her. She looked down at Cooper who was chasing a butterfly. She laughed again. "There's my spaz for you."

Kristy smiled as she looked down at the dog who only had that butterfly and catching it on his mind. He seemd to be a very happy dog, "well you two are a great pair. If you dont beat me then I dont know who can" she smiles. She looks up ahead and frowns, that log hadnt been there this morning when she had taken Oliver out. She sighed, "we either have to go around it or over it" she says as she stops staring at the large log that was probably three foot in height but about two to three foot wide. It was an old maple.

"I guess we can go over it. I mean, I was planning on just having a relaxing trip, but a little practice for the jumping contest never hurt anyone." She clicked her tongue, and leaned forward in the saddle, shifting her weight. Penny began cantering towards the log. At the last minute, her hooves left the ground and came down solidly on the other side. She waited for Kristy to follow suite.
Then she noticed Cooper was still on the opposite side of the log. He was pawing at it and whining. "You can do it, Coop" she called with an encouraging smile. "Come here boy!" Cooper barked once and then backed up and ran for the log. Mal held her breath. Cooper landed on top of the log on all fours and then jumped off of it and ran to keep up with the two girls and their horses. "Good boy" Mal exclaimed, reaching into her pocket and surfacing with a treat. She dropped it down to him and he devoured it before heading off into the woods to sniff something.

Kristy smiled, she had only jumped Flash once before. She was glad to be doing it again, she clucked and left at an extended canter. She saw the spot and frowned a little she urged him on encouraging him to take a shorter spot. As they were coming up she could tell he wasnt listening, she gave him a good thump with her heels and they took off and landed perfectly on the other side. She smiled but was panting lightly, she trotted him and then walked him, "He needs more jumping lessons" she laughs and then walks on, "That was really good though, you and Penny are deffinatly going to place this weekend" she smiles warmly.

Mal beamed proudly. "Thanks. We practice hard. But jumping isn't our specialty. Barrel racing is. We are like lightening at that event." She turned Penny around a little and pointed to the trail. "That way, right?" There were a few different ways to enter the trail and she was trying to remember the easiest one. She whistled shrilly for Cooper who came running. "Stay near me for a bit, Coop" she ordered. "Just until we're sure of where we're going." She laughed then. "I always talk to him like he's a person...it would be so cool if he could talk back." She clicked her tongue to keep Penny moving.

Kristy smiled, "well then you should be good in the timed round of jumping...Whoever is the cleanest and fastest wins. Thats why me and Silver usually win since he has racing blood in him, plus his dam was a world class jumper" she sighs and then nods, "yeah...there was about five other fallen logs on the other trail this morning and I havent had a chance to tell Lori about them" she smiles and then laughs a little, "dogs can hear you, they understand what you are saying. They talk with there eyes and actions because they arent able to speak our language" she says before looking at Mallory quickly.

Mal nodded, barely paying attention any more as she was focused on picking the easiest way down the steep hill they were on. Reaching the bottom, she shifted in the saddle to face Kristy. "I don't see you around school much...what grade are you in?"
