Kimberly was in need of a new cell phone. Her crappy Motorola Razr's screen had broken almost two months ago back when they were in Tennessee packing for Michigan. With all the craziness with the move and trying to get settled into Saint James, she hadn't yet gone to get her new upgrade. So when she found out her mum was going to the mall to run errands she caught a ride, planning on wandering the mall while her mum did what she had to do.
Kimberly left the AT&T store, a brand new LG Xenon in her hand. She said goodbye to her mother with the plan to meet in a few hours in the food court. Until then, Kimberly really had nothing to do. Her phone buzzed with a text from her brother Kyle. She was so caught up in sending a message back that she almost bumped into somebody. She looked up quickly Sorry! she said, biting her lower lip in embarassment.

"These are the cutest cleats I've ever seen!" Becky Dawes squealed, holding up the silver laced shoes by the bottoms.
"But will they help you save goals? Because that's what we're here for." Mal looked up from the sports illustrated article she was thumbing through. A pause. "Becky, you're the best goalie on the team and that's not going to change, no matter what the cleats on your feet look like and you know that!" Another pause. "Oh I get it...now that you have a boyfriend you have to look your best all the time." She swatted her friend's head with the magazine, chuckling. "Well, you have fun, I'm going to head out...try and find Matt. Don't know where he dissapeared to." She pulled out her phone and texted her older brother. The one with the keys. Her only way home as of right now. She was waiting for a text when someone walked into her and appologized immediately. "It's ok...hey...you're the new girl, right?" Realizing that was a tad insensitive she blushed. "Sorry, I mean...uh...it's Kimberly right? Hi, I'm in your biology class. Mallory Johnson." She held out her phone free hand.

It's okay...hey.. you're the new girl, right? The girl standing in front of her asked. Kimberly nodded, ignoring the girls embarassment. She was honestly starting to get used to being called the new girl and it certainly was beginning to stick at school. She hated her parents for making them move in the middle of the school year. Hey, nice to meet you she answered as Mallory introduced herself. Kimberly shook her hand with a grin, sliding her phone into her pocket with her free hand. So how fun was it to dissect those frogs the other day? she joked. She had ended up doing hers alone, the whole class had already been partnered up and the odd student had been absent so it was either join a couple or work alone. Kimberly had decided to work alone, which she regretted wholly. [/blockquote]

"I loved it" she exclaimed, entirely serious. "You didn't? Why are you taking biolgy?" She paused for a fraction of a second and then got an idea. "Hey, we could partner up next time. My partner thinks he's being gentlemanly by doing most of the work but really it just annoys me." She clapped her hands together in excitement. "What do you think?...oh hold on, that's my brother." She flipped open her phone and read the answering text quickly. He was on his way from the music store where he had bought another book of music to play on his guitar. She typed back "ok" with her thumb and put her phone away, turning her focus back to Kimberly.

Well it was biology or physics and the only class that worked with my schedule was biology. Kimberly answered with a shrug of her shoulders. She listened to Mallory, nodded when she was finished. I'd like that she answered honestly. She would love to have a lab partner that actually spoke. The boy she was currently working with was incredibly emo and barely said a word to her or anybody else. He also reeked of pot and could barely pay attention to a word she was saying. So are you going to that party this weekend at Eric's house? she asked curiously when Mallory turned her attention back to Kimberly. She wanted to go just to make more friends and maybe try to fit in at Saint James a little but she had no idea what Eric was like. [/blockquote]

"Ooh physics is nasty. Good choice with Biology." Mal gave a pleased smile when Kimberly said she would like to partner up. "Great! Ok so we'll let Mrs. Potts know next class and she can change it up so we partner." She tilted her head to the side, listening curiously as Kimberly asked her if she was going to Eric's party this weekend. "The one celebrating the fact that the basketball team is going to the playoffs? I might drop by. My brother's on the basketball team with Eric. But I have a pretty full weekend. I have a soccer game against Waterville...oh you don't know Waterville probably! Well, Waterville is the next town over and it's bigger than us and usually better at academics and athletics and stuff but we kick their butt in soccer almost every year" she explained. "Then there will most likely be a party for the team and their friends afterwards at one of the captain's houses. After that I'll have a little bit of free time which is when I'll probably go to Eric's. Then a friend of mine is sleeping over and we have a horseback riding competition Sunday morning that we're going to together." She took a deep breath. "I'm sorry, I was rambling. You just asked if I was going to the party. Not my entire weekend plans."

Sounds cool Kimberly answered when Mallory said she'd tell their teacher about their partner change. Mallory started to answer her about Eric's party and just kind of rambled on for a few minutes. She nodded her head though, enjoying the company. It's okay, I don't mind. Your weekend sounds packed and interesting. Other than maybe going to Eric's party I don't have anything to do she answered with a little shrug. It was hard being new in class and not on any sports teams or anything yet. She was still waiting on that cheerleading audition, but she might not be doing it until the basketball season.

Mal nodded with a relieved sigh when Kimberly said it was fine that she had rambled. She didn't want to drive away her new friend on the first occasion. When Kimberly said she had nothing to do, Mal's eyes lit up. "You should go to the soccer game! It's a big thing between our two schools and you could meet a lot of people that way."
"Mal, where are you? I bought the cleats...oh hey!" Becky rounded the corner, holding up her plastic bag with the new shoes in it and stopped short when she saw the new girl. "Hi...it's Kimberly, right? I'm Becky."

Kimberly nodded, I'll have to check it out, I'm sure my brother is already going. He's a huge soccer guy she answered. Kyle was ridiculous at soccer, it was almost unbelievable. He had just made captain of the varsity team in his sophomore year when they had to move to Michigan. Another girl approached them, calling out Mallory's name. Yeah, nice to meet you Kimberly answered as the girl introduced herself as Becky. Her phone buzzed and she pulled it out Um, I'll be right back, it's my brother she said before stepping away for a moment to talk to him. She hurried him off the phone though in order to get back to Mallory and Becky without being rude. Um, I've got to go get something for my brother but do you want to exchange numbers? she asked Mallory.

Mal nodded. "Well, I'm sure, if he's a big soccer person, we'll see him around. I like soccer too, but this one's obsessed." She hooked her thumb towards Becky with a teasing, yet friendly smile. "Oh, sure, go ahead, it's fine" she added reassuringly when Kimberly had to go talk to her brother on the phone.
While she was gone, Becky swatted Mal on the shoulder. "You made it seem like you don't like soccer at all and I'm some weirdo. Nice job!" She stuck out her tongue.
"Stick out that tongue again, and I'll pull it off" Mal began but quickly turned back to face Kimberly who had rejoined them. "Sure!" She passed over her phone. "Put in yours."

Kimberly smiled when Mallory said that becky was the one who was obsessed with soccer. She had heard that Becky was the star player of the team from her brother but she also knew that Mallory was pretty good as well. It was amazing really the way Kyle knew so much about the soccer teams and yet they'd only been in Saint James for a little over a week. He was such a shy guy that Kimberly couldn't figure out who he had talked to about the teams to know so much.
Kimberly took Mallory's phone from her and handed her brand new one to Mallory. She dialed in her number and saved it before closing the phone and holding it out for Mallory. So I'll definitely have to check out the game this weekend, I'm going to watch Kyle's so I might just get a ride with him and hang around she told Mallory and Becky.
