Kyle needed a book for his history class. And not one he had already read, which was the case of most of the books the teacher had to offer for their book review. His teacher said if he found another that was suitable for the time period they were studying, then he was certainly allowed to write about it instead. So that's what brought him here on this Saturday afternoon. He was in his soccer uniform still from the game that morning and his hair was matted to his forehead and, well, he certainly looked like he had just finished a soccer game. Kyle was roaming through the history books, silent in the nearly empty bookstore. It wasn't until somebody walked down his aisle did he look up.

Becky was still exhillerated from the team's win against Waterville that morning. They had annihilated the usually tough team: 7-1. And the one goal they had scored agaisnt her was on a penalty kick that shouldn't really have been one in the first place. The ref had gotten the call wrong.
"Hey Becks, we'll see you at the party" Mal called from the backseat of her mother's station wagon.
The rest of the team were all heading to the senior captain's house for a celebritory party. Becky just had to make one quick stop for a book that she promised her mother she would pick up days ago. "Yeah, definitely, I'll be there in like twenty minutes" she called as the station wagon pulled away from the curb. Becky was still in her soccer shorts, but had pulled off the sticky, sweaty jersey top and replaced it with a tank top. She yanked the elastic from her hair and slipped it around one wrist on her way into the shop.
She headed down the history aisle before she realized that there was a boy standing in front of the section where the book for her mother would be. She waited for him to notice her and then waved. "Hi."

"Hey" Kyle answered when he saw the girl standing in front of him. He stood there awkwardly for a moment - he was never really good around girls they always made him feel really shy. He looked back at the bookcase before realizing that he could possibly be in her way. "Uh sorry did you need to get over here?" he asked, stepping back against the shelf behind him and nearly knocking a pile of books over. His face turned a dark red and he looked down at the ground in embarrassment.

"Yeah...but it's ok you don't have to m-" She began to say he didn't have to move, but he did anyways, nearly knocking over a pile of books on the far shelf. She flinched, half expecting a book to land on her head. When it didn't, she plucked the book she needed from the shelf and waved him back over. "Thanks. Uh...you're new in town, right? Kyle Carter? No...Carver? Sorry, I'm terrible with last names." She tucked the book under one arm and noticed his jersey number. "Oh hey! You were at the double header this morning! We watched your guys' game for the first half and then we had to warm up for ours. Did you guys win?"

The girl grabbed the book she needed quickly, leaving him looking foolish. Well, either way he looked foolish. She noticed that he was the new guy in town and tried to figure out his last name but she said she was bad with last names. He didn't mind. Oh hey! You were at the double header this morning! We watched your guys' game for the first half then we had to warm up for ours. Did you guys win? She asked him. He was so embarrassed that he wasn't even thinking straight and he had to think for a moment to figure out what she was talking about. "Just barely" he said in a sort of angry tone. "And it's Carter" he added as an afterthought. "I saw your game, it was a close one"

Becky raised an eyebrow. "What game were you watching" she laughed. "It may have been close towards the beginning but after that we stomped them into the ground!" She lauhed good naturedly. "Anyways, nice to meet you Kyle. I'm Becky. Well, Rebecca, but no one really calls me that anymore except my mom sometimes." She laughed again. "I'm a junior at Saint James High. What grade are you in?"

Kyle nodded when she said that the game had been close at the beginning but not towards the end. "Yeah I didn't see the end of the game.. " he answered with a little shrug. She introduced herself and asked him what grade he was in. "Sophomore. You might have met my sister.. she's more outgoing than I am.." he said thinking about Kimberly. "Or my other sister shes a senior. Emma or Kimberly?"

"I haven't met Emma yet, but I'm sure I will. It's a small town." Becky smiled. "But I have met Kimberly. I met her at the mall the other day when I was shopping for new cleats since my old ones had holes in them." She shrugged sheepishly. "I wear my cleats until my mom threatens me with no more soccer if I don't buy new ones. Anyways, I was there with my friend and teammate, Mal Johnson...she's a forward on the team...and we bumped into her. She seems nice."

"Yeah it seems like everybodys met Kimberly already" Kyle answered with a sort of laugh. "You wear your cleats in huh? Me too" he said when she explained her cleats situation. "They're more comfortable worn in" He nodded when Becky said that Kimberly seemed nice. Everybody liked Kimberly. She was one of those girls that it was easy to get along with and she was a sweetheart. "I havent met Mal yet.. are you guys going to Eric's? Kimberly said she wants me to go.. what kind of crowd is gonna be there?"

Becky tried to keep up with the steady stream of things Kyle was saying. When he was done, she began ticking off her answers on her fingers. First finger. "Yeah, wearing cleats in is the best way to wear them!" Second finger. "Yeah, she seemed like it. Maybe a little shy but then again, you guys are new here and most of us have lived here our whole lives, which gives us an edge on you." Third finger. "I think Mal will be at Eric's for a brief period of time. She has a horseback riding competition the next day so she doesn't want to stay up too late. But I'll definitely be there. As to what kind of people will be there..." She let her three fingers drop to her side as she thought. "Well...there will obviously be the basketball team members. The girls basketball team will be there probably. The cheerleaders...the popular kids, basically. But anyone's invited." "Well, not everyone. My boyfriend, for one" she thought to herself, but chose not to voice that.
