Maggie opened her eyes to see sunlight streaming through her window at the hospital. She struggled into a sitting position, wincing slightly as her healing ribs throbbed a touch. She looked around. Her room, which had been full with family a little while ago, was empty. The beige walls were nearly hidden behind flower baskets and balloons. Most from the family members that had just vacated her room while she was sleeping.
According to the doctors, she had had two broken ribs on top of her various cuts and bruises and she would have to stay in the hospital for at least three days to heal properly. Maggie knew she would be out of there in two. She was a reasonably fast healer.
She wondered where Jaye had gone. She had sort of grown fond of the book keeper in the past twelve hours or so. Battling a ghost together can do that to a person. Jaye had slipped from the room when Maggie's family showed up and she hadn't returned yet, but she had said something about making a phone call.

Faye walked into the hospital, looking for Jaye. She had received a call from her friend twenty minutes prior, something about another mediator, a ghost on a rampage, and hospital. Jaye sometimes left out a few details when something exciting happened.
She had closed The Pub early that day, because she had a meeting with her Great-Uncle Liam's lawyer about a few minor details on the will. Otherwise, she would have still been there, watching the teens goof off and couples be all . . . couple-y. Before heading to the hospital, she had stopped at Jaye's bookstore to check out the damage. Faye wasn't surprised about how bad it was. She had seen some places turn out a lot worse after a . . . less than happy ghost had decided to play around.
Faye walked past a hallway and noticed Jaye leaning against the wall out of the corner of her eye. She backpedaled, almost tripping over her feet in the process, and walked up to her friend.
"Hey, want to give me a few more details now?"

Jaye grinned. "I had my first shot at mediating a ghost," she replied as if the adrenaline hadn't quite worn off yet. Sometimes it took Jaye a little longer than normal to work off adrenaline, as she usually got a bigger dose than other people. Jaye absently wondered if she had any bruises on her face yet and watched Faye for a reaction as she told the whole story.
"This girl, Maggie, came in looking for a book for her father. She had a crappy book selection so I suggested Parker to her, and she got this weird look on her face and acted like she was going to say something before changing the subject and asking if she could look around. So I got suspicious she was on drugs or planning on causing trouble and I watched her. She just stood there and looked like she was having a conversation with herself..." Jaye went on to explain how she had started to guess then that Maggie was a mediator like Faye, and how she confronted Maggie about it when Maggie asked about any violent deaths. She glossed over how exactly she confronted the poor girl, and went straight into how Maggie finally admitted it and they did the research together. Jaye summed it up with the reason the ghost was there, the struggle they had with her, and how she blamed the whole ordeal on the murderer.
"And he's even paying for damages," Jaye summed up with a happy smile.

Faye rolled her eyes. Of course Jaye would be happy about not having to pay for damages.
"So you obviously want me to meet this girl . . ." she glanced around at the few lingering doctors, nurses, and other civilians. "Yeah, not happening here. Too many normal people."
Faye didn't mention the fact that she was too shy to go into the room and just start talking to this new mediator. If she was going to talk, it was going to be in a place she was comfortable.

Jaye rolled her eyes. "There's no one in the room besides Maggie, Faye. Besides, why come all the way down here if you weren't going to meet her? I'm going in the room, come with me if you don't want to be rude!" And with a mischievous smile Jaye opened the door she was leaning on and walked into the room.

Faye froze for a moment, then slumped. She should have just called Jaye's cellphone. But, she thought, you're not supposed to have your cell on in a hospital.
Faye walked into the small room. She turned to face her friend first. "You suck, I hope you know." Then she turned to address the girl on the bed. "I'm Fayette O'Connor. I own The Pub, the coffee shop next to Jaye's bookstore. I'm a mediator. Who are you?"
Faye knew she was being rude, but she couldn't help it. It was a self-defense mechanism.

Jaye grinned again. "This is the friend I was talking about," Jaye told Maggie. "Ignore her rudeness, she's just like that when she's uncomfortable."

Maggie had been trying to figure out how to work the tv remote with her bandaged hands when the door flung open and two people entered: one she recognized immediately and the other, the reluctant one, she didn't recognize at all, but had a suspicion that she knew who it was.
Her suspicion was confirmed when Jaye spoke up. She sat up a little straighter, wincing, and offered a half smile in their general direction. "I'm Maggie" was her response to Faye's inquiry.

At seeing the girl's painful movements, Faye felt a little guilty about how she had spoken to her. "So, Jaye told me you're a mediator as well, Maggie. Nice to meet you."
She glanced at her friend. "I saw the mess that you guys made in Jaye's bookstore . . . Good job, guys."

"There wouldn't have been a problem if there wasn't a ghost," Jaye said. "I'm just glad Maggie was there to see her before crap started flying around, so that I knew what was going on."

Maggie flinched at Faye's words about the shop. "Hey, that ghost was mad" she explained defensively. Turning to Jaye, she added, "And I can help clean that up. I know an officer said he would have some men do it, and they probably will but I'm sure they won't be aiming for re-organizing everything...they'll probably just be aiming for making it look presentable to the public and not all glass covered and stuff."

Jaye smiled at Maggie. "I'd appreciate the help," she said. "I'll be sure to save a bit of work for you to do when you get out of this joint."

Maggie looked around and chuckled, immediately wishing she hadn't as her ribs began to ache from the pressure of laughing. With an abrupt stop to her cheeriness, she explained, "oh I'll be out of here in a day or so, it won't be too long, don't worry about it. Go away" she added after a second. Perhaps Jaye may have thought she was still talking to her, but the direction she was now staring should have probably made it all clear, and if that didn't work, Faye would definitely be able to explain the alrication to her friend.
Scott gave an injured sniff from his position by the open window. "Oh, come on Maggie, are you still mad because I couldn't help you out with Amy? I told you I was sorry about that. I wanted to see how you were."
"I'm fine" she replied sharply, turning away, hoping he would give up and dissappear for awhile until she was ready to forgive him.

"And while you're at it, you can stop by my shop if you ever need to talk. You could bus tables for me, too, if you need a little pocket money." Faye offered. She didn't really think she was experienced enough to take a younger mediator under her wing, but she didn't want to leave the girl to her own devices. And maybe she could learn some other tricks, as well. Faye noticed the ghost standing by the window. She looked at him suspiciously. "Who are you?

Jaye looked from Faye to Maggie and back. "Another ghost?" she asked. "Friendly, I'm assuming."
