Maggie pulled her messy brown hair into a ponytail and locked up the back door. Her parents were still at work and her brothers were both at sports practices of different kinds. She had just gotten out of the hospital that morning and her mother had begged her to relax in the house for the day, but Maggie had bluntly refused, explaining that she had a job to get to.
She pocketed the keys and strolled downtown. It was about ten minutes from her gated community. She pulled up the hood of her sweatshirt to keep the wind from biting at her cheeks. Spotting The Pub almost immediately, she lowered her hood and entered the building. She didn't see Faye immediately, so she stood around waiting for her, rubbing her hands together to keep warm.

Faye was in the kitchen when she heard the bell from the front door. She set down her mixing bowl on the counter and wiped her hands on a cloth. Then she stuck her head out of the door and saw Maggie standing there. "Hey, come on back. I'm just making a batch of cookies, and we can talk while I finish that up."

Maggie looked up at Faye's voice and did as she suggested, following her into the back room where the good smells were even stronger. Maggie took a seat and watched as Faye went back to her cookies. "How long have you been baking" she wanted to know. Sure, she was supposed to be talking about mediating, but there was time for that later she knew.

"I used to live with my aunt in Boston, and she was the co-owner of a bakery. I helped out there a lot when I was younger." Faye said as she added more cranberries to the cookies. "This is my specialty, oatmeal craisin cookies. Can you go grab me a couple of baking sheets, please? And a spoon, too."

"Sure." Maggie was fascinated. She hopped off her chair and went in search of the desired sheets and spoon. She returned moments later with them. Handing them over, she stayed by Faye's side this time instead of going back to her seat. She wanted to see how this worked close up.

Faye dug out a spoonful of the cookie dough and placed it on the baking sheet. After a few minutes, the bowl was empty and both baking sheets were full. After putting the cookies in the oven and starting the timer, she washed her hands and sat down on one of the stools in the kitchen. "So, ready to get started?"

Maggie sort of followed Faye around like a puppy in those few minutes, watching as she filled the sheets, put them in the oven, set the timer, and finally got all washed up. When Faye took a seat, Maggie sat down across from her reluctantly. She would rather watch more cooking than talk about her bizzare paranormal gift. But it was the main reason she was here so she took a deep breath and let it out with a smile. "Ready."

"Ok." Faye replied. "So, when did your mediator powers manifest?"
She saw that the girl was a little uncomfortable, so she stood up. "Wait, before you answer, I'm going to get us something to drink. What would you like? I have tea, coffee, hot chocolate, water, and some soda."

Maggie opened her mouth to respond and was interrupted by Faye. "Uh...water's fine. Thanks." She waited for Faye to return with the drinks before answering the original question. "My uncle died when I was five and about two months later I saw my first ghost...him."

"Alright." She filled a couple of glasses with some cold water, then returned to her seat. After hearing Maggie's answer, she replied. "Wow, that must have been crazy. How old are you now? Eighteen?"

"I'm sixteen." Maggie straightened up a little, happy that Faye thought she was older than she really was. Of course to be fair, she did act older than her mere sixteen years of age, what with being shouldered with such a big responsibility of helping ghosts move on and such.

"Wow, ok. Sixteen. You seem older." Faye shrugged. She was never good at guessing ages, anyways. "I was your age when I met my first ghost. You've been at this whole mediator thing longer than I have, so I'm not sure if I can really give you a lot of advice. I'm just being honest, Maggie."

"Lots of people say that" she assured Faye and then hastily added, "the whole me looking older thing...not the whole being honest thing. But it's ok. Really, I understand. Honesty is important, and honestly...I didn't really expect you to be able to offer me any advice I haven't already given myself." She paused, thinking about it for a minute. "I'm sorry, was that rude" she finally asked. She usually didn't care if what she said to others sounded rude, harsh, or just plain bitchy, but she had grown fond of Faye, and Jaye in the past few days and was starting to care a little more how she acted around them.

"It's alright, I know how you feel." Faye grinned. "We're all just doing the best we can, right? Sometimes I wish there was a Mediator Handbook or something. But, just so you know, if you ever need any help, maybe with a ghost or an exorcism or even just with homework, you can come to me."
She was hoping that would be the end of the mediator conversation, because wasn't she really comfortable talking about it a lot. After standing up and stretching, Faye checked on the cookies. "Great, they're almost done. While we're waiting, I'll show you around, and show you what you'll be doing when you're working, ok?"

"Sure, thanks. Same here. Well...with everything but the homework part." She shrugged with a half grin. She was really glad when the topic was changed. "Sounds great!" She jumped to her feet and followed Faye around the shop. She was really fascinated by all this stuff and wished she could bake things that required actually cooking skill. Not like putting a pop tart in the microwave. Which was about as far as her culinary skills went.
