Faye showed Maggie all of the stuff that she needed to do when she was working and then finished the cookies, and of course the girls sampled them after they were cool.
"Hey, Maggie, take a couple of these cookies and a cup of Red Rose tea with sugar over to Jaye, please. If you don't take it over soon, she'll come over in a rampage." Faye smirked. "If you work here regularly, you'll get to see zombie-Jaye pretty often."

Maggie was in heaven. The cookies were delicious. She ate four. And then wished she hadn't eaten them so fast. Finishing her water, she wrapped a few cookies in a napkin and picked up the mug of tea. "Sure, I'll be right back." She passed through the arch and into The First Page. "Jaye" she called, looking around for the bookshop's owner. Not seeing her, she left the refreshments on the counter with a note and went back to The Pub. "I couldn't find her but I left her a note" she explained.

"Oh, she'll find them soon. She's like a dog that way, her nose always leads her to food." Faye laughed. She loved teasing her friend.

Jaye had just come downstairs from feeding her animals when she smelled cookies. Craisin Oatmeal if she was guessing right. She perked up and jogged down the rest of her stairs to see a napkin on her counter with a steaming mug of tea and a three still hot cookies. She grinned and read the writing on the napkin. It was a standard "I came to visit but you weren't here--eat this and enjoy" note from Maggie. Jaye realized with a start that today must be Maggie's first day of work and grabbed her snacks to go enjoy over at The Pub.
Jaye walked in and heard Faye's comment about "zombie Jaye". "Hey, I'm only a zombie early in the morning."

Faye looked up from the counter she was cleaning when she heard Jaye's comment. "No, you're a zombie from when you wake up until you get your coffee. Then you're a normal human being."

Jaye made dismissive sound and turned to Maggie. "So how's working for the Irish brat?"

Maggie looked from Jaye to Faye and then back to Jaye. She put up her hands in a gesture of surrender. "Woah, no way. I am NOT getting in the middle of that" she laughed.

Faye just glared at Jaye, sniffed, then turned away. "No birthday cake for you now."
Faye was just bluffing, but she wanted to see Jaye's initial reaction. Jaye loved her cakes, and since they were friends, she didn't charge her. Faye had a small side business that consisted of . . . baking. She had missed baking at her aunt's shop and The Pub had a large, rarely used kitchen, so it was the perfect opportunity to start baking again.

Jaye's eye twitched at Faye's mention of cutting off her birthday cake supply, but she restrained herself from making threats and instead let out a ragged sigh. "I knew you were just using me for free books!" she wailed playfully.

"Truce, then? You get cake, I get books, and no more teasing until tomorrow?" Faye bargained.

"Sounds good," Jaye agreed. "Thanks for the cookies, by the way."

"You're welcome." Faye said. A couple of customers came in. "Back to work now."
