Laurie slid her hands into her pockets as she walked down the senior wing of St. James High. School had started four days ago but she had just moved to St. James because of a delay with the house her father had bought. She looked nervously around her at the other students shuffling around and wondered how long it would take her to fit in.

Maggie was on her way to the sophomore wing, but she was taking a detour through the senior wing. There was no reason behind it, she was just bored and still had ten minutes before homeroom started. She passed a few senior boys from the basketball team who gave her weird looks and began talking to each other in low tones. Maggie was used to it. She wasn't what you would call one of the most popular people in Saint-James High School even though she had been living in Saint-James, Michigan her entire life. Well, let's face it. When you go around talking to "yourself" and breaking bones over and over and getting concussions and being dragged home by the police at all hours of the day, you aren't really elected homecoming queen. So Maggie ignored the strange looks and kept walking.

Laurie had just opened her locker to stuff her backpack in when she heard some whispers nearby and looked up. The whispers sounded like the typical gossip meant to be heard by the one being whispered about. She really hated that kind of thing, and wanted to see who was doing the whispering. She usually tried to stay away from those kinds of people.
When she looked up she saw some typical jocks whispering, heads close together but all looking in the same direction--at the same student. She looked younger, maybe a sophomore, with longish brown hair that was slightly curly. Laurie could see that she had dark eyes, and was actually pretty. She wondered if maybe the guys whispering were actually checking her out, but then she noticed the other students giving this one a wide berth, and mostly being obvious about it.
Laurie felt like walking up and introducing herself to this girl, but she wondered if the other girl would take it as pity. Laurie shrugged. She'd rather have the girl get annoyed with her thinking she was pitying her than not meet her at all. Laurie shut everything in her locker except the notebook and pen she'd use for her first class and made her way over. She needed to talk to someone anyway.
"Hi," she said to the girl once she had approached. "My name's Laurie and I'm new. Could you show me where Mr. Thompson's History class is please?"

Maggie looked up when she heard someone address her. It was another new student. She had already met three so far this week. It must be good realtor price in Saint-James, she thought with a wry smile. Then she realized that she hadn't answered the other girl. Holding out one hand to shake the girl's, she spoke up. "Hi, I'm Maggie. It's actually on the way to my homeroom. This way." She pointed and then began walking. "So how do you like Saint-James?"

Laurie smiled and shook Maggie's hand, falling in to walk beside her.
"Well, we just got in late last night, my dad brother and I, so I haven't seen much of it yet," she admitted. "But so far I guess I like it. You'll have to ask me again at the end of the day," Laurie chuckled.
"What do you think of it?" she asked. "Have you lived here all your life?"

Maggie nodded with a mixed look of annoyance and pleasure. "I was born in Saint-James Hospital and taken right to the same house that I live in right now. I'm a true Saint-James girl." She switched her tote bag from one shoulder to the other as they passed through a pair of heavy glass doors that led to the history hallway, just before the sophomore corridor.

"You sound like you don't like living here," Laurie observed, sensing the annoyance in the other girl.

Maggie backtracked. "No, no, I do. It's just that I have met a few other people that have done a lot of traveling in their life and I've only really ever been to the west coast of the united states for vacation once. Other than that I stay here." She scratched an itch on her elbow. "Where did you guys move here from?"

"We're from Maine," Laurie answered. "I've never really felt like traveling," Laurie admitted. "So I don't know what that's like. "I don't think anyone in my family is that interested in travel." She looked at her watch.
"Oh! We're going to be late. Where's the room? And when do you have lunch? We should sit together." Laurie smiled.

"Uh..." Maggie shook her head to clear it of all the "bouncy" that was being thrown at her. "I have lunch after fifth period...technically. But sometimes I skip gym and eat lunch earlier. When's yours?" The bell rang again, giving them each three minutes to get to class. Maggie wasn't all that concerned with time, but knew Laurie probably was. Being her first day and all. "Here, why don't we just switch numbers and we can text each other?"

"Sounds good!" Laurie said, giving Maggie her cell number and taking down the girl's. She was excited that she hadn't even had her first class but already seemed to have a friend.

Maggie entered Laurie's number and immediately texted her:
"Hey. It's me."
She grinned, waved, and headed off to science.

Laurie grinned back and headed into History class.
Time passes. A few classes later.
Laurie looked at the clock: five minutes until the end of Anatomy. She really did not like Anatomy. Laurie pulled out her cell and texted Maggie.
"Hey, I have five minutes left in class then lunch."

Maggie's cell went off in Miss. Grant's history class. Miss. Grant is the older lady who gave Maggie a detention for calling her names...even though the names weren't really directed at her. Miss. Grant gave Maggie this scary look. "Sorry, Miss. Grant, I'll turn it off." Maggie fished around for her phone and tucked it under her desk to text back:
"Get me out of here. The old bat won't leave me alone."

"You didn't forget to put your phone on silent, did you?" Laurie asked.
